CHAPTER 3

ARE WE TALKING MERCENARY OR GLORIFIED, SEXY BODYGUARDS?

DAWSON

I’d fucked up. Dead. That's what I would be, one way or another. I should have never gone out there. Not until we had a better idea of what we were facing. I cursed myself for following my instincts since I definitely wasn't following my brain. If I had been, I would have found Grimm and Casper to help them find their mates. Instead, they were off trying to find Xia. But they weren't here, and now I was. I was so consumed by the scent that I had absentmindedly traced it and cast a tracking spell. That was the only way I could have possibly been transported here. I couldn't have done it intentionally… right?

I realized my mistake the moment the scent hit me... a heady mix of jasmine and danger that made my blood thrum with recognition. My Tsigo was close, but so was the danger. I'd let my guard down, driven by instinct and the intoxicating trail her essence had left in the air. The tracking spell had done its job all too well, leading me straight into the lion's den, or more accurately, ATI's compound.

With every step I took deeper into the heart of enemy territory, my pulse quickened. It wasn't just the presence of armed guards or the hum of high-tech security measures that set me on edge... it was the sense that this place was imbued with magick. The kind that could sniff out an intruder. But they hadn't counted on me... magick never worked correctly around me. It didn't matter if it was my own or someone else's.

The shadows played tricks on my eyes as I navigated through the maze of concrete and steel, each corner teeming with potential disaster. I couldn't afford doubt or fear now, not when she was somewhere within these walls, waiting for me, needing me. The note I'd snapped a picture of and sent to my handler was a taunt, a breadcrumb left by those who had taken her and the other mates from the BOBS team. This was one slight I wouldn't let pass without retaliation.

"Find your Tsigo," I muttered under my breath, using the term that meant soul mate among those of us with shifter blood. The urgency clawed at my insides, urging me forward. I needed to locate her and tear through whatever stood between us. Each second wasted was a second too long. Never in my life had I needed something like I needed to find her right now.

I crept along the shadows of the compound, taking note of the intricate weave of magick and machinery that fortified it. Cameras swiveled atop high fences, their lenses glinting in the moonlight like the eyes of predators. Spells woven into the very air shimmered faintly, a warning to those attuned to their existence. There were layers upon layers of defenses, and I was one man... a man whose powers came with no guarantee, or even common sense.

"Focus," I scolded myself silently, shaking off the rising panic.
